Tutoring
UNLV offers tutoring for almost every subject
taught on campus. Some options are free of charge, and others have a small
fee. Contact the individual office for more information.
- Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach
The center provides tutoring throughout the year for virtually every area of study. Students can opt for a few individual or group sessions or pay for an "all access" pass to all sessions offered for a subject.
The center also offers free workshops throughout the year to fine-tune your study skills, time-management skills, or test-taking strategies. Contact the center at 702-895-4782 or stop by SSC 201 for more information.
- UNLV
Math Tutoring Clinic
The UNLV Math Tutoring Clinic offers free tutoring
for most lower-level math courses. There are walk-in hours as well
as individual appointments available. Contact the UNLV Math
Clinic at 702-895-5154 to find out the current location, schedule,
and information.
- College
of Education Mathematics Center and Clinic
The College of Education offers
free tutoring for education majors enrolled in MATH 122 or 123
in addition to sessions for PPST preparation. Contact the clinic
at 702-895-1197.
- Writing Center
The
Writing Center offers free services to assist you with writing assignments
from brainstorming and outlines to proofreading final drafts. They
also offers essay and grammar workshops throughout the year. Contact
the Writing Center at 702-895-3908 or visit them in CDC 3-301.

Placement Tests
Placement is required for enrollment into your first English, math, foreign language, and chemistry courses. Below you will find information regarding placement for these subjects. For placement into courses not listed here, please contact the individual departments.
- Mathematics (MATH) and English (ENG)
UNLV uses your ACT or SAT test scores as the basis for placement into
your first English or math course. See where you place based on your current
test score. If you do not have an ACT or SAT test score or you
would like to improve your current placement, there are a few options
available to you on campus.
- ACT Residual
University College offers the ACT residual periodically throughout the year. The ACT residual exam results are valid only at UNLV. Students can opt to take the entire exam or just one or two of the sections. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot early. Contact University College at 702-895-3177 or stop into FDH 452 for more information. The Mathematics Department offers free placement tests; call the department at 895-3567 to set up a day/time.
- English
Composition Placement
Students can submit a placement portfolio to the English Composition Department for review. Included in the portfolio is a timed writing sample proctored by one of the English Department faculty members on campus. The current fee to have your portfolio reviewed is $20. - Math Department Placement Test
The Math Department offers
a free placement test during the year. Please contact the department
at 702-895-3567 to arrange your test date.
- Chemistry
The Chemistry Department requires placement for enrollment into CHEM 121: General Chemistry I. Students intending on taking this course must successfully pass the chemistry placement exam or earn a "C" or better in CHEM 103: Preparatory Chemistry. Contact the Chemistry Department at 702-895–3510 for information regarding the placement test.
- Foreign Language
Students with previous foreign language exposure wishing to enroll in a language course at UNLV are encouraged to complete the free foreign language written placement exam offered by the Department of Foreign Languages. Please contact the department at 702-895-3431 or in FDH 508 for more information.
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
For students whose first language is not English, the English Language Center offers ESL courses to aid in the language-learning process. The ELC places students into ESL courses based on their placement test. To arrange the placement test, contact the ELC at 702-895-1264.
International students planning to attend UNLV must earn a satisfactory score on an English placement test. The ELC offers the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MTLEP) regularly throughout the school year. Contact the ELC at 702-895-1264 for more information.
