Find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about core requirements for math.
- How do I know which math course to take first?
UNLV uses your ACT and SAT scores as a basis for placement into your first math course. Find out which course you should take.
- What is the lowest math course I can take for my major?
The math requirement varies with each major. Some majors require several semesters of math, while others require only one. Please refer to your major's degree worksheet or visit the department's section of the undergraduate catalog.
- It looks like I did not test into the required math course, but rather MATH 095 or 096; what types of courses are these?
MATH 095 and 096 are preparatory math courses designed to cover the fundamentals of math. Upon completion of the courses, students will have the foundation necessary to take any entry-level math course at UNLV. Since these are preparatory courses, they do not count toward the total needed for graduation. Please consult your advisor if you have questions on how it will affect financial aid, degree progress, etc.
- Does the Math Department have a placement test?
Yes! The Math Department offers a placement test periodically throughout
the semester. Contact them at 702-895-3567 or in CBC B411 for test
dates and times.
- I am not strong in math; is tutoring available?
Yes! UNLV has several resources for tutoring on campus. Please visit the Placement Test/Tutoring page for more information.
- I took a statistics course at another institution; will this satisfy my math requirement?
No. The math requirement can be completed only with a nonstatistical math course.
