Find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about core requirements for English composition.
- How do I know which English course to take first?
UNLV uses your ACT and/or SAT scores as a basis for placement into your first English course. Find out which course you should take.
- If I received a 30 on my ACTs or a 680 on my SATs and tested into ENG 102, do I have to take ENG 101?
No. If you test into ENG 102, you do not have to take ENG 101. However, please note that you will not receive credit for ENG 101 if you test out of the course.
- I received AP credit for ENG 101; can I just sign up for ENG 102?
Yes! Be sure to have an official copy of your AP scores sent to UNLV. Once the scores are in our system, you can register for ENG 102. If you're waiting for your scores to show up in our system, take a copy of your scores to the ENG department to be placed into ENG 102. You will still need to submit official scores to UNLV to receive credit for ENG 101.
- I placed into ENG 101E because my ACT score is between 17 and 20 or my SAT score is between 400 and 500; do I receive credit for this course?
Yes! ENG 101E is the first course in a two-semester sequence designed to allow students to complete ENG 101 at a slower pace. You will take ENG 101E your first semester, and then you will take ENG 101F the following semester. Upon completion of ENG 101E and 101F, you will be able to take ENG 102. You will receive credit for both ENG 101E and 101F; however, ENG 101E is a pass/fail course, and ENG 101F is traditionally graded.
- I placed into ENG 098 because my ACT score is below 17 or my SAT score is below 400; what type of course is this?
ENG 098 is a preparatory English course designed to cover the fundamentals of writing. Upon completion of the course, students will have the foundation necessary to take ENG 101. Since this is a preparatory course, it does not count toward the total needed for graduation. Please consult your advisor if you have questions on how it will affect financial aid, degree progress, etc.
- I think I completed my ENG 101 and 102 requirements at my previous institution; why does it not show on my degree worksheet?
A course taken at another institution may or may not count toward a specific requirement at UNLV. To be sure, bring a course description to your advisor, who can fill out the necessary paperwork to find out if the course will satisfy the requirement if appropriate.
- English is not my first language; what English courses should I take?
Non-native English speakers may take ENG 113 and 114: Composition I & II for International Students. These two courses are equivalent to ENG 101 and 102 in the gen ed core. Placement via a language placement test is required. For more information regarding testing, visit the English Language Center. For additional information regarding the courses, please contact the English composition department at 702-895-3165.
